Sketchbook (2014 - present)
Sketchbook is a series of three notebooks in which Al Banna records his abstractions. Dotted with minimalist outlines or miniature models of his final collages, they are created using scraps of leftover paper laying around the studio from previous works. The Sketchbook has become a sort of diary of visions, each page dated and adorned with a moment of inspiration so as to form the basis and reference of his works. Unlike an architect’s ‘floor plan’, these formations are bereft of scale, dimension, and any link to space or other physical features. They do not abide by the laws of physics; the grid here cannot hold. Slowly, they puncture through the pages and glide into reality, as Al Banna reworks them into the rules of the space they occupy, rendered into his final collages of variant sizes.
